WHAT IS VOIP?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) allows you to make phone calls over the internet, as opposed to traditional landline PSTN or ISDN solutions. A hosted VoIP solution will guarantee a lower monthly cost and cheaper calls while also providing a flexible working and improved reliability. Simply put, it’s the future of telephony.

WHAT IS SIP?

SIP is short for Session Initiation Protocol. This provides virtual phone lines over the internet removing the need for PSTN/ISDN phone lines.

WHAT IS PSTN?

PSTN is short for Public Switched Telephone Network. This is the public circuit-switched network providing traditional analogue telephony around the world, operated by BT Openreach in the UK.

WHAT IS ISDN?

ISDN is short for Integrated Services Digital Network. This is a set of communication standards for simultaneous digital transmission of voice, video, data, and other services over PSTN.

WHY SHOULD I MOVE AWAY FROM PSTN/ISDN?

BT Openreach have announced their intention to cease the PSTN (traditional analogue phone line) and ISDN networks. This begins with stopping new orders of ISDN in 2020 and a full switch off by 2025.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO ISDN LINES?

The recent investment in the UK communications network has made fibre infrastructure widely available and affordable to all businesses. This means IP based solutions such as VoIP and SIP are the top alternatives for businesses.

DO I STILL NEED A PHONE LINE?

No. Your phones would connect to the phone system via your internet connection, so no more line rental fees!

HOW DOES VOIP WORK?

When a customer calls your phone number, the call is connected to your VoIP phone system over the internet and sent to your handsets or softphones anywhere in the world thanks to VoIP working entirely in the cloud.

WHAT IS DECT?

DECT stands for Digital European/Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. It is a standard primarily used for creating cordless telephone systems, to allow cordless handsets to communicate with wired base stations.

DO I NEED TO WORRY ABOUT BANDWIDTH,

HOW MUCH DOES A CALL USE?

The short answer is no! 3cx calls use less than 100kbps each with top notch quality to easily beat any mobile, so even a standard 20Mbps ADSL2 connection could support up to 200 calls. In most cases your existing business Internet connection will support your phones without impacting your day to day use.
